Some of you may know the people involved in putting on the 4th Annual Panagea Project Benefit - Deb Delman, Executive Director of The Pangaea Project, Matt Butler, E.O. conductor, Craig Howard, Jason Mastrine, and Gene Ehrbar, who are promoting the show, to name a few. We were in a meeting the other day when someone started pointing out the various degrees of separation between all the players involved in this year’s celebration. It’s a pretty tight knit group.
Within minutes this fun game had extended to include us and fans like us so it got us to thinking, what if other people attending the benefit next month each posted their six degrees of the Pangaea Proejct Benefit with The Everyone Orchestra on this website…relevant details, stories, trivia, etc. What will we discover about each other and the people around us? Pangaea and EO are all about community so it seems only appropriate. We can’t wait to hear your stories and learn how connected we all really are.
Here’s one to get you started. Feel free to create your own!
• Jeff Sipe and Tye North played together in Leftover Salmon.
• Jeff is the founder of Zambiland Orchestra to which EO attributes much of its’ inspiration.
• Matt Butler of EO met Stanton Moore while drumming at a Zambiland performance in Atlanta.
• When our friend and (likely) your’s, Sun Lee of KBOO Radio, won the guest conductor raffle at the benefit in ‘06 he was wearing a Zambiland t-shirt.

Deb Delman used to work for Planet Bluegrass where Leftover Salmon played many times.
Tye and Michael Kang were bandmates in Commotion.
Michael Kang participated in EO at the Village Building Convergence last year.
So did Darol Anger and Asher Fulero.
Darol played the EO set at Smilefest.
So did Jeff Sipe.

I became a taper in 1997. Some of my first shows were those great Tony Furtado Band gigs at the Fox Theatre.
I used to put Deb Delman on the SCI guestlist because she babysat a band member’s kids. Perks.
My wife has a rockstar crush on Scott Law.

I met Matt Butler through some long-time Jambay family. I met Deb Delman through our mutual friend Jon Fishman and that was my first introduction to Everyone Orchestra. I met Tye North and Scott Law through Jason Mastrine who lived in Colo. but now lives here and was introduced by a mutual friend. I also met a friend named Charlie through that same friend who introduced me to Sun Lee. I only know my wife because of a Phish connection and my wife has Stanton Moore on her “list”. I met Jeff Sipe back in the early 90’s when the Aquarium Rescue Unit blew 100 people’s minds every night LOL.

I’m a drummer at heart, so I always loved great drummers. Met Matt Butler through Jeremy & Neil at the first ever EO. Met Taper Jeff through Jeremy also. Traded Galactic shows (mmmmm, Stanton Moore) online with Brian (getjams), he moved to Portland. Met Jason Mastrine through Brian when he moved to Portland also.
Met Sun through volunteering with HeadCount. Learned we had a ton of mutual friends. Was standing next to him when he won the guest conducting spot.

The Pangaea Project Everyone Orchestra collaboration began in 2003 during a conversation between Deb Delman and Jon Fishman.
Deb has known Mike Gordon from Phish since she was 5 years old. She grew up with him in Sudbury, Mass. Meanwhile, Jon Fishman grew up with Deb’s first cousins in Syracuse, N.Y.
Deb and Jon discovered, 20 years later, that they were both at her cousin and his old friend Suzanne’s funeral in 1983.
Deb and Jon randomly (or not!) bumped into each other in a little restaurant in New Orleans one year, one week after they had unknowingly missed each other by two days in a tiny town in the Atacama desert of northern Chile.
Tony, Deb and Kang all lived at the same house in Boulder in the mid-90’s, the Double Dig.
Deb moved to Portland partly because of her old friends from Boulder, Jo and Tye.
Deb’s Dad’s wife was a key financial advisor for Phish long before she met Deb’s Dad.
Michael Kang has played with a band called Panjea for many years. (even though they spell their name wrong!)
The Pangaea Soap Company is from Boulder, Colorado, where Tye, Tony, Deb, Billy, Jans and Kang all met.
Tony stayed with Giovanna, Tye’s wife, and Deb, at their house on the hill in Boulder, the first night he arrived in Boulder back in 1994.
Tony used to play in a band started by the founder of Planet Bluegrass’s ex-wife, Sally Truitt, while Giovanna, Tye’s wife worked there(but hadn’t met Tye yet)
The Pangaea students participated in the VBC last year that Kang played at.
Tony and Tye have played at every benefit that Deb has thrown, including several in Boulder in the late 90’s, before the creation of The Pangaea Project.
Julie, Matt Butler’s wife, is old college friends with Steve Rosenthal, the founder of Cross Cultural Solutions, where Jodie Emmett, one of the original Pangaea Project Board and staff members, worked for the first four years of their development.

Mines not too deep. Every Friday night/Saturday morning, I pee in Jason Mastrine’s mailbox, I believe he has hired Scott Law to hunt me down and I left a trail of urine leading to Tye North’s house.
